Frequently Asked Questions
What is the time commitment to be on the Phillips West board?
Board members should expect to contribute 5 hours of their time per month at minimum over a one year term. Of course, board time commitments beyond this minimum can be highly variable based on your capacity and what you choose to put in. For example, time commitments vary by the position that you have on the board; board officers, which include Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer should expect to designate more time than a member at-large. The time commitment can also vary if you choose to help lead a committee, project, or fundraising effort for example.
All board members must attend monthly board meetings. Board meetings take place on the fourth Monday of the month from 6:00 – 7:30pm. This 1.5 hour commitment is mandatory (with up to 3 absences per year permitted). We also encourage board members to attend monthly community meetings which take place on the first Thursday of the month, also from 6:00 – 7:30pm.
Please remember, the Phillips West board is only as effective as the energy that it’s members put in. We ask that you seriously consider your capacity before nominating yourself for the board. At the same time, we want board positions to be open and accessible to community members who have time constraints; we understand that you have lives and other obligations beyond PWNO! The most helpful thing you can do is to be honest about your capacity so that expectations are clear.
What does the board do?
The primary role of the board is to ensure the health and sustainability of the Phillips West Neighborhood Organization. This means ensuring financial health, reviewing policies and procedures, and making sure that PWNO is operating with transparency and clarity. The board takes votes on policies and budgets, and monitors the work of any paid staff or consultants. In short, the PWNO board is tasked with ensuring that Phillips West is a functional and legally compliant organization while pursuing our organizational mission. This is important work!
It is also important to note that organizing events and running programs are not the primary function of the board, although board members are welcome to participate in these aspects of the organization as well. If your primary desire is to organize events and programs, perhaps participating on a PWNO committee is a better fit for your efforts.
